Not liking a mess, I have often shied away from providing sand, rice, or other such material for scooping, measuring and pouring. The kids do get to play in the sand at the beach in the summer, and of course with water in the bath. But just recently Simon and Clover came up with a great alternative that I find much more tolerable--they've been scooping, measuring and pouring pony beads! Since the beads we have happen to be neon colors, they're pretty easy to find when they go astray, too.
